Condensed Matter Physics

Research on quantum matter is concerned with the macroscopic and microscopic physical properties of materials that arise or emerge from the quantum-mechanical nature of their ingredients. Experimental activities include surface physics (group Natterer), exotic magnets (group Janoschek), high-temperature and unconventional superconductivity (groups Schilling, Chang), oxide materials (group Nordlander, Gibert), low dimensional systems (group Greber), disordered soft matter systems (group Aegerter) and search for new materials (group Schilling, Nordlander). The theory groups (Bzdusek, Neupert) study topological phases of quantum matter with numerical and analytical tools.

Muoniverse is a new Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR), a major initiative that uses muons (heavy cousins of electrons) to explore the hidden structures of materials in completely non-destructive ways.
